The 2016 election made an issue of white, red state Americans angry about their declining social and economic status, and feeling animus for the political classes and immigrants who “brought them down.”
We've heard this before: Nixon's “Silent Majority” and the GOP's “Southern Strategy” were blowing the dog whistle long before Reagan's team ginned up a “missile gap,” amped up the arms race and entered proxy wars in Central America... Lee Atwater and Karl Rove – they knew how to push our buttons.
America lost a staggering number of jobs in the transition from manufacturing to service economies, in the elevation of financial services, and unhinged concentration of wealth by America's Executive class. The “little guy” or “average Joe” got screwed, became resentful in the process, and felt abandoned and abused, even as they forgot the “last hired, first fired” people of color who were shoved out the door before them.
We know because we've been there.
lyrics
Rust Belt
I was punched in the gut
and kicked in the shin,
They pumped out all the lights
and peeled back my skin.
They're gonna shut down
the factory tonight,
They're gonna close the line
for the very last time.
I'm gonna punch out tonight
for the very last time.
Tonight,
For the very last time.
Tonight,
For the very last time.
You know they thanked me for my work,
thanked me for my time,
But the hedge fund's gonna close
this assembly line.
Put our pensions in the tank,
threw us under the bus,
Now the whole town's sinking
and my skin's begun to rust.
I'm gonna punch out
tonight
for the very last time.
Tonight,
For the very last time.
Tonight,
For the very last time.
Now there's 1200 holes
in the factory floor,
And 12000 miles
Just to walk back in the door,
And 12 more years
to pay off what I owe,
And 12 more minutes
before the the whistle blows.
I'm gonna punch out
tonight
for the very last time.
Tonight,
For the very last time.
Tonight,
For the very last time.

In this age of overproduced shiny pop confections, "New York's Calling," is a bitter, yet necessary pill to swallow, and a
raw and ragged testimony to the power of real rock and roll.
