Someone said the news coverage of Trump's 2016 Presidential campaign was easily the equivalent of hundreds of millions of dollars in media buys. It didn't matter what the story line was – “canny, media- savvy real estate developer with the Midas touch turned billionaire” or “race-baiting misogynist trailing a dismal history of bankruptcies” – everything about the guy seemed larger than life. Sheer spectacle.
And it was great for the bottom line of the media organizations that covered the guy 24/7. There were eyeballs, ratings, ad sales, and career opportunities galore. I'm not saying journos were craven, they were just “feeding the machine” and the volume was over-the-top. We couldn't get enough.
