National DNA 02:26
National DNA Coast to coast, Across the 'waves, Every broadcast imprints The National DNA. Border to border, Edge to edge to edge, Every broadcast imprints The Exceptional American. Why can't you control your impulse? Your mother said your father said. That control is so long gone, No text to say the subtext wrote the impulse wrong. So you turn TV on And find yourself another frame. Maybe it's a dog whistle, Maybe it's some alt.right game. Or maybe it's a drone feed, Erasing more humanity. Blade to blade, Across the strands, Streaming real and imagined American homelands. Intercept to intercept, Link to link to link, Compliant metadata For who we see and how we think. So you put your white hat on And the world opens up to you. Built out ready for inception, Tipping over to inflection, Merging into your reflection, The Exceptional American

Rust Belt 04:32
Rust Belt I was punched in the gut and kicked in the shin, They pumped out all the lights and peeled back my skin. They're gonna shut down the factory tonight, They're gonna close the line for the very last time. I'm gonna punch out tonight for the very last time. Tonight, For the very last time. Tonight, For the very last time. You know they thanked me for my work, thanked me for my time, But the hedge fund's gonna close this assembly line. Put our pensions in the tank, threw us under the bus, Now the whole town's sinking and my skin's begun to rust. I'm gonna punch out tonight for the very last time. Tonight, For the very last time. Tonight, For the very last time. Now there's 1200 holes in the factory floor, And 12000 miles Just to walk back in the door, And 12 more years to pay off what I owe, And 12 more minutes before the the whistle blows. I'm gonna punch out tonight for the very last time. Tonight, For the very last time. Tonight, For the very last time.

Racing to the Bottom Jill's in the Fun House, playing for time, Jack's in the Road House, cooking up dimes. Mary and Joseph are loading their guns, Racing to the bottom, but the bottom don't come. Boy toy, she boy, what's your name? Your color don't matter when your skin's in the game. Wage slave, dues paid, salary men, Racing to the bottom, to the same damn end. Heaven sent a message and the message can't wait: Better punch your ticket if you want to get straight. But I can't get straight 'less I unwind, So I'm racing to the bottom, working overtime. Jesus from K-Street he's up on the Hill, Shaking down the money tree, working miracles. Back home in the bar room he's feeling pretty fine, Racing to the bottom, baby, I got mine. Racing to the bottom, baby, I got mine. Racing to the bottom, there's no finish line.

You all crass You all blame You set the world on fire And the House is in flames. New York's calling New York's calling To you. New York's calling You better understand This is the story Gonna build out your brand If you can't be our dog Just throw up a bone, If you can't be our whore Then don't come home. New York's calling New York's calling For you There's a lot of places to land You can claw up all the backs And step on all the hands. You the superstar power name You might even get Your own table at Elaine's! So get your ass on the plane That story we filed was so yesterday New York's calling New York's calling For you. Rent Strike 01:57
Rent Strike Don't pay your taxes Don't pay your water bill Don't pay your car loan Go ahead and be shrill. Don't pay your mortgage Don't pay your bank card Don't pay insurance Tell 'em you work hard. Get on the line I'm tellin' ya It's time to make THEM mind: We're gonna have a rent strike, A National Rent Strike! We're gonna have a rent strike, A National Rent Strike! Don't go to the office Don't drive the school bus Don't brew their coffee Not until THEY serve US. Don't pick up garbage Don't answer the phones Don't let the ICE in Nobody's home. Get on the line I'm tellin' ya It's time to make THEM mind: We're gonna have a rent strike, A National Rent Strike! We're gonna have a rent strike, A National Rent Strike! Renters and Rentiers Renters and Rentiers Which side are you on Cause it's time to be clear. We're gonna make them hear us, We're gonna make them fear us. Cause the people got the power! Cause the people got the power! We're gonna have a rent strike, A National Rent Strike! We're gonna have a rent strike, A National Rent Strike! Strike! Strike! Strike!

about

TIME TO GET WYRD!!!

Don't let the fact that Brian Wolfe and Peter Mitchell (Brian and Peter Wyrd) first played together back in the 1960's cloud your perception about their relevance and conviction. Fifty years after their initial performances as "The Wyrd Brothers," Brian and Peter have reunited to release a collection of incredibly hard hitting and timely tunes entitled "New York's Calling." This five song EP is not for the faint hearted, as it delivers a potent mix of rock and roll that is every bit as raw as the Sex Pistols or New York Dolls. Titles such as "National DNA," "Racing to the Bottom," "Rent Strike," "Rust Belt" and the title track all feature Peter's intelligent, hard hitting yet socially biting lyrics that would make Billy Bragg proud. The message: Yes, the country is a big mess, and we are not going to be shy in telling you all about it.

My favorite track off the record is "Rust Belt," showcasing Brian's raw guitar that is reminiscent of mid-period Crazy Horse amidst a set of lyrics documenting the loss of manufacturing jobs to greed.

In this age of overproduced shiny pop confections, "New York's Calling," is a bitter, yet necessary pill to swallow, and a raw and ragged testimony to the power of real rock and roll.

- Tom Guerra - Songwriter/Guitarist/Contributing Writer for Vintage Guitar Magazine.
